CHOOSE THE RIGHT OPTION

FCL vs. LCL: Which Solution Fits Your Cargo?

FCL (Full Container Load)

Full container shipping solution tailored for large volume shipments.

Optimal Volume

Fills a container (typically over 13-15 CBM)

Pricing Model

Flat rate per container (20'/40' fixed), regardless of fill percentage

Cargo Safety

Dedicated seal, zero co-loading risk, minimal handling damage

Turnaround Time

Faster transit, no waiting time for cargo consolidation

Customs Inspection

Inspection applies solely to your own consignment

Best For

Manufacturers and trading enterprises with bulk, recurring shipments.

LCL (Less than Container Load)

Consolidated freight solution optimizing logistics spend for smaller consignments.

Optimal Volume

Smaller shipments below the full container threshold

Pricing Model

Charged by actual volume/weight used (CBM or metric tons / w/m basis)

Cargo Safety

Co-loaded with multiple shippers; requires robust protective packaging

Turnaround Time

Additional time required for cargo consolidation at the CFS warehouse

Customs Inspection

If one shipment is held for inspection, the entire container may be delayed

Best For

SMEs, product samples, pilot shipments, and low-frequency consignments.

Note: The 13-15 CBM threshold is a standard industry rule-of-thumb; actual breakeven points vary depending on specific ocean freight rates, commodity type, and sailing schedules.

Required Documents & Information

To ensure seamless booking confirmations and timely vessel loading, please prepare the following cargo details and commercial documents.

Commodity name, quantity, gross weight, volume (CBM), required container type (FCL: 20'GP / 40'GP / 40'HC).
Sales Contract, Commercial Invoice, Packing List — details must match consistently to prevent discrepancies during shipping manifest filing.
Booking Note (carrier/forwarder confirmation), Bill of Lading (B/L) — review Draft B/L thoroughly prior to original issuance to avoid amendment fees and customs release delays.
Certificate of Origin (C/O), Quality Certificate (C/Q), Phytosanitary/Fumigation Certificate, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS for batteries or chemical cargo approvals).
Confirm contractual trade terms (Group E/F: buyer books freight; Group C/D: seller handles ocean carriage) to establish clear accountability for booking, marine insurance, and ancillary terminal fees.
Complete consignee and notify party contact details to secure prompt Arrival Notice transmission and D/O issuance, avoiding demurrage/detention at destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Addressing key questions regarding ocean freight operations, documentation, and cost management.

FCL (Full Container Load) is optimal for large shipments (typically above 13-15 CBM), high-security commodities, or continuous high-volume supply chains. LCL (Less than Container Load) is cost-effective for smaller consignments (a few CBM) or samples, as you only pay for the exact volume used.
DEM (Demurrage): Container yard storage charges at the terminal.
DET (Detention): Charges for keeping container equipment outside the port past the allowance.
Storage: Port authority yard ground usage fee.
To prevent penalties, prepare clearance documents in advance, track vessel arrival closely, and return equipment within the granted free time window (typically 3-7 days).
Vessel booking responsibility depends strictly on the agreed Incoterms in your sales contract. For example, under FOB, FCA, or EXW, the Buyer arranges and pays international ocean carriage. Under CIF, CFR, or DAP, the Seller bears the responsibility to secure booking and pay ocean freight.
Port-to-port transit times depend on the route, weather conditions, and direct vs. transshipment vessel service. Generally: Southeast Asia takes 2-7 days; Northeast Asia 5-15 days; Europe 25-35 days; and the Americas 15-30 days.
Unless mandated by contract terms (e.g. CIF, CIP), marine insurance is not legally mandatory but strongly advised to protect against ocean perils, catastrophic weather, or General Average declarations. You can purchase coverage via insurance underwriters or have Allship arrange policies with preferred corporate rates.
